Netflix Winds Down Its DVD Business After 25 Years:
Netflix, which began as a DVD shipping company, is closing its DVD business. Netflix announced on Tuesday that it will ship its last discs from DVD.com on September 29th. In a blog post, the company said that “Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members but as the business continues to shrink that’s going to become increasingly difficult.”
The Rise and Fall of Netflix’s DVD Business:
Netflix’s DVD business started in 1998, and over the years, it has shipped over 5.2 billion DVDs. It acquired the DVD.com domain in 2012, but now the business is coming to an end. The most popular movie the company has shipped is “The Blind Side.” In 2011, the company tried to spin off the DVD business into a separate entity called Qwikster, but the plan was later reversed.
After 25 years of operation, Netflix’s DVD business is coming to an end. While the company began as a DVD shipping service, it has since evolved into one of the largest streaming platforms in the world. As the streaming business continues to grow, it is not surprising to see Netflix shutting down its DVD operations. The company’s decision to wind down its DVD business is a testament to the changing media landscape and the dominance of streaming services.
