What does the CleanRouter subscription cover?
Think of the CleanRouter hardware as the “Body” and the subscription as the “Brain.” We give you the hardware for free to get you started. Your subscription covers the daily AI updates, cloud intelligence that analyzes the top 10 million websites for safety, and our technical support. It keeps your shield effective against new threats that pop up every day.
How is CleanRouter different from other parental control devices?
Most other devices are just “monitoring” tools that tell you after something bad has happened. CleanRouter is a “prevention” tool. Our hardware sits at the front door of your internet and uses AI to filter content before it hits your devices, offering a much stronger layer of protection than simple apps or monitoring dongles.
How does the AI filtering work?
Unlike old filters that just use “block lists,” CleanRouter uses an advanced AI engine. It constantly analyzes the top 10 million websites by traffic, reading context and content to assign safety scores. It understands the difference between a medical site and an inappropriate one, blocking threats in real-time while keeping the good internet open.
I'm not tech-savvy. Is it hard to set up?
Not at all. We designed CleanRouter to be “Plug and Play.” It arrives pre-configured—simply plug it in, and it starts working. If you ever get stuck, our support team is just a phone call away to walk you through it.
Will it work with my Internet Service Provider?
Yes. CleanRouter works with almost every provider (Fiber, Cable, DSL, Starlink, etc.). It connects directly to your modem. If you have a “gateway” (modem+router combo), CleanRouter simply plugs into it and takes over the Wi-Fi duties.
Will CleanRouter slow down my internet?
No. CleanRouter is built with high-performance processors designed to handle heavy traffic without lag. In fact, because our AI blocks ad-servers and unwanted data before it enters your home, many users report that their browsing feels snappier and cleaner.
Does CleanRouter provide Wi-Fi?
Absolutely. It is a powerful Wi-Fi 6 router designed to blanket your home in coverage. For larger homes or difficult layouts, we also offer Mesh nodes to eliminate dead zones and ensure your safety filter reaches every corner of the house.
Will CleanRouter block legitimate websites?
Rarely. Our AI is context-aware, meaning it’s smart enough to distinguish between “bad” content and normal sites. However, you are always in control. If a site is ever blocked by mistake, you can bypass it instantly through your parent portal or app.
I use OpenDNS. Why switch to CleanRouter?
OpenDNS relies on static lists of “bad domains.” If a new bad site pops up today, OpenDNS might miss it for weeks. CleanRouter’s AI is dynamic—it inspects content in real-time. Plus, CleanRouter enforces SafeSearch on Google, which DNS services often can’t do effectively.
Can I use CleanRouter with other filtering software?
You usually don’t need to! CleanRouter covers all devices on the network automatically. However, it typically works fine alongside device-level apps like Bark or Covenant Eyes if you want layered protection.
I'm not tech savvy. How difficult will it be to set up and manage my Clean Router?

Will Clean Router work with my Smartphone / Tablet / SmartTV / Gaming console / Millennium Falcon?
Clean Router will work with nearly all internet-capable devices! This includes Windows and Mac computers, tablets (iPad, Android), smart phones (iPhone, Android, Windows), Smart TVs, iPods and gaming systems such as Xbox and PlayStation. If you happen to have a Millennium Falcon with internet capabilities, you are clearly cooler than us. Give us a call, and we’ll see what we can do.
Will Clean Router replace my current router?
Yes! In most cases you will simply unplug your current router and replace it with the Clean Router. It’s really that easy! If you have a combined modem/router (meaning you don’t have a router) then you will plug the Clean Router into your modem/router and make sure all devices are connected to the Clean Router. Make sure to disable the Wi-Fi on your existing modem/router.
Will Clean Router block my favorite websites?
No! Clean Router uses our proprietary IntelliFilter™ intelligent filtering system. This advanced filtration system prevents Clean Router from blocking benign websites. If we do mess up and block one of your favorite websites, you can add it to your customizable white list. If you’d like to access certain websites but keep them blocked for your kids, you can enter a password to temporarily bypass the Clean Router.
Will Clean Router work with my current internet service?
Clean Router works with almost every Internet Service Provider! Our system works best connected to a modem (a piece of equipment given to you by your ISP) and cable or DSL internet. If you are unsure if you meet these requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact our support team!
Circle killed my internet speed. Will Clean Router do the same?
No! When configured correctly, Clean Router has a minimal impact on network performance. (Psst! Hey! Down here! Some customers have reported faster internet speeds after installing Clean Router because it blocks ads at the gateway. Fewer ads = faster page loading! We don’t “officially” advertise Clean Router as an internet speed booster, but we wanted to let you know the word on the street.)

I really like my current router, will Clean Router work with it?
Yes – almost always. Clean Router works well with other routers, but your devices must be connected directly to Clean Router, or to a router that is connected to Clean Router.
How does the filtering actually work?
The router works on text-based algorithms to detect inappropriate pages. Each page and its URL are dynamically registered against known words and phrases that can trigger the blocking mechanism. There are actually several layers of filtering going on as each page is loaded. On top of that, each page is logged for a complete history. /images and Videos are screened in the same way, with their URLs and title checked against our list of keywords and phrases. In addition to the automatic filtering components, there are also user-defined filters as well. Users have access to a white, grey, and black list. You can even edit a special keyword list, that defines what the filter screens for!
I use OpenDNS. Why should I switch to Clean Router?

Can I use Clean Router with other filtering solutions?
