How to Keep Porn Out of Your Home

Maybe pornography has found its way into your home, and you want it out. Maybe no one in your house has discovered porn, but you want to keep it that way. No matter your situation, creating a porn-proof home is a high priority for you. The question is, how?

XXXChurch, a Christian anti-porn organization, published four tips for preventing pornography in your home. They are:

1) “Change up your whole living space, from bed sheets to pantry to picture frames.”

The author of the article, J.S. Park, explains that our minds create powerful associations. If a member of your family is struggling with an addiction to pornography, a new space will create a new atmosphere that may help them in their recovery.

If pornography is not a problem in your home right now, completely redecorating your living space probably is not necessary. However, placing items that reflect your family’s values around the house and especially around the computer will help your family members remember their standards as they surf the web.

2) “Keep your electronics insulated in boundary zones.”

The article suggests setting limits to internet access such as keeping  your laptop in the hallway, setting passwords to unlock devices, or setting up a strict internet filter. If it is more difficult to get online, the reasoning goes, getting to pornography will be harder and take longer.

Keeping electronic devices in public places definitely decreases the likelihood that your family members will access pornography. Most family internet safety experts recommend that computers and smart phones are disallowed in children’s bedrooms.

3) “Keep alternative options close by.”

For pornography addicts, XXXChurch suggests going on a run or chewing gum when the urge strikes. This principle can be helpful for anyone wanting to avoid pornography, though. If your first instinct when you are bored is to go online, you are much more likely to encounter pornography. Remind yourself to stay unplugged in the face of boredom, and encourage your family to read a book, play a board game, or shoot some hoops instead of always staring at a screen.

4) “Be willing to leave your house immediately.”

Or a friend’s house. Or a movie theater. Or turn off the smart phone, laptop, desktop, or tablet. If pornography shows up on your screen, be ready and willing to leave. Teach your kids to do the same, and let them know you will always help them to leave if necessary.
